What is music therapy?

Music Therapy is an evidence-based profession, which uses music clinically as a tool to promote therapeutic change in areas of social, emotional, physical, cognitive, psychological and existential domains. Music therapists adapt their sessions to the participant to achieve goals that would help restore, maintain or improve functioning and quality of life. Music therapy is an internationally established profession used as part of interdisciplinary healthcare support. Music therapy interventions are person-centred and evidence based and can only be conducted by a fully qualified music therapist. Music therapy is not music teaching or entertainment. No prior music experience is needed to attend a music therapy session. It's focus is on improving non-musical strengths by using music as a tool. Music therapy through its therapeutic relationship promotes healing, growth and achieving personal potential.
